Stop thinking you need to be perfect.

"No matter how far you have gone on the wrong road, you can always turn around" -Unknown

Now I will be the first one to admit I absolutely hate when something isn't perfect, I don't mean an individual but something I have created this could be a cake or an essay. If it isn't perfect I feel like it is the end of the world and that I did was bad as bad could be. But that is not always the case.

Perfectionism can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it can drive you to do your best work and achieve great things. On the other hand, it can also hold you back from taking risks and trying new things. In fact, some studies have shown that perfectionism is linked to anxiety and depression.

If you find that perfectionism is holding you back, there are a few things you can do to overcome it:
  • Recognise that perfection is impossible. No matter how hard you try, you will never be perfect. Accepting this fact can help you let go of the need to be perfect and focus on doing your best.
  • Set realistic goals. Instead of aiming for perfection, set goals that are challenging but achievable. Give yourself a mini-boost every now and then. This can help you build confidence and avoid the self-doubt that often comes with perfectionism.
  • Embrace mistakes. Making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process. Instead of beating yourself up over mistakes, try to learn from them and use them as opportunities for growth. Mistakes allow you to improve and that is amazing.
  • Practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a friend. This can help you let go of unrealistic expectations and focus on the things that really matter. (See one of our MANY self-care posts for additional help)
By taking these steps, you can overcome the negative effects of perfectionism and achieve your full potential. To quote High School Musical: 'We are all in this together'. No one should EVER make you feel like perfect is the only way to be. If that is in social media, your work life, school, college...anywhere...perfectionism is not as it seems.

We are all somewhat imperfect and that is just as we are meant to be.
