Working From Home

"Focus on being productive instead of being busy."- Tim Ferriss

I’m fortunate enough to be able to work from home. One thing I can say though is that it can be extremely difficult with distractions.

Here are some ways I conquer the difficulties and create a good working environment.

1. Having a “space” for your work that is separate to my chill space. Mixing the two is a big no.
Although I don’t have an office at home, I make it a priority to not work in my bedroom. This ensures that I have a productive environment whether I’m at home or in the office.

2. Having a routine. I have a very specific schedule when I am working from home. I make sure that it looks nothing like my ordinary day at home. I wake up early, cook myself breakfast and set up my “office” space of the day. Usually in my living room.

3. Avoiding your phone. Now I don’t completely leave my phone, I do reply to texts. Butttt…what I avoid is going on social media because that takes me into a rabbit hole of endless reels and TikTok’s.  I have been guilty of getting distracted for at least 30 minutes during work so I had to make a strict rule for it. It is far too dangerous to use social media when there’s work to be done.

4. Taking a break at the same time every time I am home. I am also guilty of working through my break, which is again the worst thing you can do to yourself. Breaks are important to get some rest from your work, to have a breather, to refresh yourself. Skipping break does not help with productivity.

5. Music. I’m gonna say it, it doesn’t matter what genre of music you listen to. I’ve learned that most music helps to have a good flow whilst working. When I listen to a song with a fast melody I find myself typing to the beat. It helps create a fun atmosphere and allows you to view work in a more positive light.

6. Exercise / Movement. It is not good to keep sitting all day. Whenever I feel like I’ve sat for too long I do take a 5 minute break to energise myself.
Sometimes I have my lunch whilst working and use my 30 minute break to exercise. This helps me to prioritise myself and have better focus on my work.

These are just some things that help me to have better focus when working from home.
If you’ve had the chance to work from home, what are your ways to increase productivity?

I hope that these tips can help you, whether you’re writing an essay for an assignment or even applying for jobs. Create that productive and fun environment for yourself so you can focus and become the best version of yourself.

Love,
Imaan xx
