Why Self-care is important during Autumn.

As we move towards the end of the year, the days get shorter, and the weather becomes colder and wetter, more wet than usual. Looking after ourselves during this time is very important so here are some reasons why self-care is especially important during autumn:
  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) affects some people during autumn and winter. SAD is a type of depression that's linked to changes in the seasons. Symptoms include low mood, irritability, and a lack of energy. While I am no medical expert practicing self-care can help alleviate some of the symptoms of SAD. For example, spending time outdoors during the day can help regulate your body clock and improve your mood, even if that is just walking to the shop or sitting in the garden.
  • The new school year is well underway and the work season can be stressful as we get closer to Christmas. If you're a student or work in education, the autumn season can be particularly challenging, but trust me you've got this and it will get easier. You may be starting a new course, or you may be dealing with the pressure of exams and assignments. If you work in a job that's busiest during the autumn season, you may be feeling overwhelmed.   • The change in weather can affect your physical health, you may ache more and feel more tired. Autumn is a time when colds and flu start to circulate and trust me I've already had my first and second cold of the season. The colder weather can also aggravate conditions such as asthma and arthritis. Taking care of yourself by eating healthily, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly can help boost your immune system and keep you healthy. You might also want to invest in some hand warmed which can be placed almost anywhere.
  • The festive season can be stressful. Although the festive season doesn't officially start until well November, preparations often begin in autumn and sometimes still in Summer. The stress of buying gifts, planning events, and spending time with family can be overwhelming. Practicing self-care can help you manage stress and enjoy the festive season.
Overall, autumn can be a challenging time for many people. Practicing self-care can help you feel more resilient and better able to cope with the challenges that autumn brings. Take time for yourself are a bare minimum, you need to recentre yourself and remember you are amazing!
