Self-Care during Seasonal Depression

Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
 – St. Francis of Assisi

Anyone else really thrive during Summer? I know I do. I just feel so happy and in control during summer. And then autumn begins I start to feel down. It is that time when seasonal depression starts to come about.

The days feels shorter and you have less quality time with the sun. This can create a decline in energy levels.

Here are some tips of how to feel energetic and joyous during the colder seasons.

Exercise: I cannot stress enough how important it is to exercise. There’s so many variations of exercise. You can dance if you want to. Me personally, I do a mix of dancing and cardio, it’s so fun and I am never upset after I finish exercising.
In fact I’m happy that I pushed through and kept myself motivated.

Skincare: During the colder seasons our skin tends to be drier. It’s important to moisturise it, whether that be your face or your body. For my face, Korean sheetmasks really do wonders for my dry skin. I also feel much more relaxed when I take care of my skin.

Candles: Creating a cosy atmosphere  is one of the most simple but beautiful things you can do yourself. Your environment heavily impacts your mental health, so being in an atmosphere that is “cosy” is a message to your brain that you are surrounded by relaxants instead of stressors. I feel like I’m meditating whenever I have a candle on even though it’s just on whilst I complete my daily chores. A major plus is having a candle on whilst you do your skincare routine, it will feel like you’re on some retreat.

Hot Coffee (beverage): Okay hear me out, it doesn’t have to be coffee. It can be a hot beverage that you love. Tea? Hot chocolate? Pumpkin spiced latte?
Whichever is your choice, I’m sure all have an equal effect of bringing some joy during autumn and even winter.

Sprucing Up Your Wardrobe: Whether it’s a luxury brand or thrifted, having something “new” can bring excitement. I try not to shop too much but when I do, it does make me happier. Adding to what you already have. You can change your aesthetic for the colder seasons and play with fashion.

Reading: There is nothing like getting al snuggled up and reading a book, whether it's one you love or something new. It's also filling yourself with some more knowledge of a good story or even something factual. Whatever it is, it is good self-care to read instead of watching television. A good way to be productive whilst remaining cosy and relaxed.

I hope that as it gets colder, you feel warmer and happier!
Hopefully all of these or some of these are things that can truly help you to feel like you've truly cared for yourself.

Love,
Imaan xx
