“There is no such thing as work-life balance - it is all life. The balance has to be within you.”
I am someone that struggles with a work life balance. The minute I start working I feel my job consume me, I often feel burdened and I struggle to take good care of myself. It's not good to feel like this in every job so here are some ways I maintain a healthy work-life balance and create a flow for myself.
- Set Priorities: It's important to set priorities for yourself when trying to maintain a work life balance. This is when you find out what's important and what isn't. There were so many random parts to my life that I thought were important, but when I started working and needed to minus some things from my daily routine, I realised I didn't need to be doing most of it.
- Rest, rest and rest!: I know life can be busy and to-do-lists can be endless. When you come home from work, just rest. finish up that cooking and lay back. It's okay to stay in during the weekend, especially if your body needs it. Rest is essential and if you ignore what your body needs you can really crash. I've definitely suffered burn out and I had to rest for a couple of days to bring myself back up. It was a lesson worth learning, especially when the outcome was to prioritise my rest.
- Leave work where it belongs...at your work place!: If you have a job where you can bring your work home, just don't. Try your best to complete all your work at your office. I remember the first time I brought home some work to complete, it's fair to say that was also my last time.
- Quality time with the people that matter: Now I touched in needing rest to avoid burnout, however, it’s also important to spend time with the people you love. Whether that be a cute day out in Shrewsbury, shopping day in Birmingham, or a week of shopping, eating and museum hopping in Liverpool. Seeing your friends can be uplifting and energising. I personally love spending time with my friends and family. they mean so much to me that all my depression and anxiety goes away after a day of quality time. It’s so beautiful to create memories with the ones close to your heart.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to take care of yourself. It can get difficult when you don't have as much time but I promise you, it's worth it in the end. I too am learning to prioritise my health and well being. When I take care of myself I don't suffer with burnout as much as I used to.
Baby steps are all you need. :)
