“To make a great film you need three things – the script, the script and the script.” – Alfred Hitchcock
7. Clueless: There is nothing better than a “girly” film to comfort you when you’re feeling off. There are just so many I can list, but ‘Clueless’ is definitely up there for me. I think Paul Rudd might have something to do with that, but I adore Alicia Silverstone, she definitely dominated the late 90s as Cher Horowitz. This film just makes me feel good whenever I watch, and so it has to be part of my comfort film list. Plus I get to hear one of my favourite lines "You're a virgin who can't drive."
8. Scooby-Doo: Yes I am talking about the live action one where Sarah Michelle Geller plays Daphne and Freddie Prinze Jr. plays Fred. I feel a sense of comfort when rewatcing any films that I adored as a child. This film is nostalgic for me, I remember even having the Daphne Barbie doll based on the film version. Basically, Sarah Michelle Gellar is my comfort.
Don’t you just love a good comfort film? You could be having a horrible day and a visit to another universe will make you forget about your problems. Here are some films that I find comforting, they are not in any particular order, just remembering some of my favourite films as I write.
1. The Goonies: A true classic that I’ve grown up watching. Every time I watch I feel like I’m on a treasure hunt with Mikey, Mouth, Data and Chunk. The first time I watched it I felt like I was part of a friendship group and whenever I watch it now, I feel nostalgic. It takes me back to my simple childhood when I could be swept off my feet to another world.
2. Spirited Away: Another childhood classic, the world that Hayao Miyazaki has created is so captivating. This film was an integral part of my childhood and it made it to my adulthood. The animation is simply beautiful, I remember wanting to watch just to see the beautiful landscape sceneries. This film takes me into a meditative mode and also grips onto my heart. It is a brilliant watch no matter what language you watch it in.
4. The Karate Kid: My childhood was filled with Karate Kid. I think there was some relatability to Daniel LaRusso being bullied by Johnny Lawrence and his friends, but Mr. Miyagi sweeping in and teaching karate to Daniel was the coolest thing ever! I remember wanting to learn myself.
3. Your Name.: I have yet to watch this film without crying. It’s crazy that I’ve seen this film about five times and every single watch has ended with me crying. A beautiful and wholesome love story with some twists on the way. I won’t say much because I hate giving spoilers but it truly is a must watch!
5. The Sixth Sense: I still remember the first time I watched this and being blown away by the twist at the end. I was home ill from school and I loved the film so much that I watched it the whole week at home. Thinking about it today, I definitely felt a sense of comfort from this film.
6. Fantastic Mr. Fox: Similarly, to ‘The Sixth Sense’ this is a film that I watched when I was ill at home from school and I absolutely loved it! I’m pretty sure I re-watched it for a couple of days too. This is a film I still love re-watching today.
Basically, Sarah Michelle Gellar is my comfort.
9. Me Before You: It’s the saddest but also the most wholesome romance I’ve seen. Whenever I want a good cry I watch this. Some people might think it weird to watch a sad film in order to feel comfort but it’s all the scenes before the sad that make it worth it.
10. Mean Girls: This is one of my favourite films! It’s a genius teen comedy that only gets more hilarious the more you watch. This is a y2k classic.
The list is endless but I should stop here before I get to 100. I’d love to know some of your comfort films.
Love,
Imaan xx
