Dealing With Rejection

“Every time I thought I was being rejected from something good, I was actually being re-directed to something better.” – Dr. Steve Maraboli

I have been trying to find a new job for some time now but I’ve not been getting any luck, one of the words I see the most when applying for jobs is “unfortunately”. That word alone is so powerful that it makes me feel worthless and as if I can never amount to anything. It’s been a difficult journey and seeing that word puts me down continuously. It has gotten to the point that whenever I do apply for a job I’m expecting the word “unfortunately” and even though I expect it, it still kills me and makes me spiral. However, I’m sick of going through this rut so here are some ways I deal with rejection.

1. Accepting:
The first easiest thing to do is distract myself and escape the real world for a little while, whether that be watching a film, gaming or even reading a book. Being put in the shoes of a character momentarily takes away my problems and feelings. Yes, this might not be the healthiest way to cope with negative feelings but it certainly helps to shift gear and change my mood. You also never know when you’re going to see, hear or read something motivational that will help change your feelings and thoughts.

2. Talking to family/friends:
Sometimes the people around you can uplift you. In my case it’s usually my friends and my mum that make me feel motivated to keep going and work hard. Friends and family can advise you based on their personal experiences and show you a new perspective.

3. Self-care:
a.) Exercise: Now I don’t work out regularly but when I do I always feel happier. There have been times where I’ve been crying during my workout but once I’m done I feel great! Exercise releases endorphins, so it literally feels like you’re letting a burden off your chest.
b.) Putting makeup on: Yes really! The moment I do my makeup I feel much more confident and ready to take on the world. Doing my makeup reminds me that if I can enhance my beauty, I can enhance my health and my life.
c.) Having a self-care day: taking a warm shower or bath, doing my skincare and body care, just dedicating the day to taking care of myself helps me love myself and reminds me that I’m worth it.

4. Closet Clean-out:
The saying "Out with the old and in with the new" couldn't be any clearer. Ditching things you no longer need can change your mindset to be more optimistic, it opens the door to new possibilities. By the end you will no longer be looking to the past but to the future, ready to add new things into your life. Whenever I do this, I'm grateful for the ways my items have served me and I'm ready to look onward.

Hope some of these can be helpful to dealing with rejection, it doesn't even have to be rejection. Whether you're feeling anxious, sad or even angry, I hope that some of these things can help you feel calm, peaceful and joyous.

Love,

Imaan xx
