A guide to decluttering

"The best way to find out what we need is to get rid of what we don't." - Marie Kondo.

A quote from the queen of decluttering herself. I don't know about you but I have been obsessed with decluttering and organising my space recently and have been watching The Home Edit on Netflix everyday for motivation. I won't say that I live a minimalist life, I collect Funkos and I don't plan on removing them to create a minimalist look but I do try to stay organised.

Taking some inspiration from the ladies at the Home Edit and Marie Kondo I have compiled a short and simple list to help you declutter successfully.

Step One- Imagine

Now you night think this to be a strange place to begin but trust me. Stand in the space you want to declutter and imagine what you want it to look like. Are your shelves organised by colour? Is your bed going to have any cute pillows on? Will you hang or fold your jeans? Once you have an image in mind you can begin to declutter.

Step Two- Work in zones.

Now this is definitely inspired by The Home Edit, their use of the word zone is like no other, they use it a lot. But it does help you with your declutter. If you are doing your entire room start with the wardrobe or your makeup drawers or that stack of books in the corner. Declutter in zones will help you no get too overwhelmed.

Step Three- Do I really need it?

This is the step where you reduce the number of items in your given zone. The notion of bringing joy from Marie Kondo definitely helps here but also keep in mind when you look at the item what does it look like? Broken? Missing a piece? Holes? Too big? Impractical? If you had forgotten about it chances are you won't miss it if you declutter it.

Step Four- Cleaning the space.

Time to grab the vacuum or the duster and give your space the once over. Maybe you wanted to repaint it or move it to another area of the home or room. This is your time to do it.

Step Five- Pop it back.

The final step in our declutter is to put things back. You could break this step down further and categorise the items within your zone. If we take clothes as an example, skirts, dresses, joggers and so on. If we look at books maybe by genre or by author, you might even decide to categorise them by colour of the book cover. it is completely up to you. Don't over complicate it, make sure it is manageable and easy on the up keep.

So there you have it my five simple steps to decluttering, hopefully this will help you give you a starting point for your own declutter and organising journey.

Happy Organising.

Kisses
