“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”
- Winston Churchill
I am someone that has always had a routine. I don’t enjoy much change and I prefer life to go the same way as my plans.
This year I don’t want to live like that. I want to expect the unexpected. I want to live a life of excitement and adventures!
So here are some things that I’m changing this year to make space for fun.
• Saying no: I used to be the type of person to cancel plans the day before and then I would regret it. Now I want to be the person who says yes and means it. So far I’ve found that the busier my life is with work and fun, I am really able to enjoy time out with my friends. It helps me let off steam! So this year I don’t want to say no as much as I used to. Of course rest is important too but I want this year to be filled with connection and enjoyment.
• Embracing alone time: I’ve always loved spending time with myself but definitely took it for granted. Now with a busier lifestyle I don’t get much time for myself. So whenever I am alone, I want to really take advantage of it and take care of myself.
• Exercise: Okay, so I’m very hot and cold with working out. Sometimes I do well and exercise 3-4 times a week. But then I also go months without any exercise. So in December 2023 I started the habit to exercise during my lunch breaks, it helps if you work from home. This has helped me a lot, I get to exercise more often and gain back energy for work. Doing it this way has helped me make time for it and make sure that I actually do it.
• Giving in to cravings: When my time of month is near my cravings grow to the point that I can eat a pack of 6 Krispy Kreme donuts in one go. And the problem is that I end up giving in most of the time. This year I want to eat better and healthier food. In order to achieve this I have substituted my cravings, so if I’m craving something sweet I will eat some fruit and if I’m craving something savoury like crisps, then I will eat pistachios or some kind of nut.
• Going with the flow: this is a newer mind set I’ve brought upon myself. I am someone that gets anxious if plans change and when things don’t go my way. Now if there is even a little delay in my journey to a place, I will say “It’s okay, different journey.” When I say this it comforts me and reminds me that I don’t need to have the same easy journey every single time. It’s okay to hit some bumps on the road, it’s okay if something unexpected happens. I can just take a different direction.
Hopefully by the end of this year I will be able to tell you that I did all these things but if that’s not the case that is okay too.
It’s important to remember not to put too much pressure on yourself. If things change it could be a good change. And if it’s something bad, then it’s a journey of growth and learning.
Remember not to be too hard on yourself!
Love,
Imaan xx
